My family recently enjoyed a holiday getaway to West Virginia aka "Almost Heaven". It gets its nickname "Almost Heaven" for good reason. It's a perfect place to connect with nature and explore the many sites, foods, shops, and people that make truly unique.
Did you know that West Virginia is just a few hours from the D.C. area and Philadelphia? We snuck away for a few days to Oglebay Resort in Wheeling, and can't wait to tell you about our stay. Oglebay is a beautiful, 2,000-acre public park, and the only self-supporting public municipal park in the U.S.
There are so many family activities to enjoy at Oglebay, even in winter. Take a dip in the indoor pool, play some games in the Lounge, hike one of the countless trails on property, or spend an afternoon at the Oglebay Good Zoo. My kids had a blast getting to meet some of the zoo's 68 species of animals up close. The Zoo was full of educational exhibits and programs that promoted an appreciation of wildlife to its visitors.
We went during their Festival of Lights, so there were tons of holiday festivities going on including a Trolley Light Tour, and an evening Candy Cane Cordial with holiday treats, live music, and beloved character appearances.
If you have never been to West Virginia, 2024 is the perfect time to plan your first visit. With outdoor adventures, shopping, history, and plenty of culture to enjoy, there is truly something for everyone in West Virginia.
