If you’re anywhere near central Pennsylvania, The Markets at Shrewsbury is a spot you don’t want to miss. This charming Amish-run market, located in Glen Rock, features 19 merchants offering everything from fresh produce and baked goods to farm-fresh meats and cheeses. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, it’s the kind of place that makes shopping feel like an adventure rather than a chore.
Walking through the market is a little adventure in itself. Each vendor has something special to offer, from fruits and veggies picked fresh that morning to homemade jams, breads, and canned goodies that taste like they came straight from grandma’s kitchen. And the baked treats? Let’s just say they’re so irresistible, you might leave with more than you planned (I definitely did!).
Feeling hungry? My girls and I picked up some treats and drinks as we strolled through the market, turning snack time into a little adventure. The smell of baked goods mingling with fresh coffee is enough to make anyone’s mouth water. And bonus: the kids think they’re on a treasure hunt, so you get a happy snack break and a little entertainment all in one.
If food isn’t your main focus, there’s still plenty to see. The market features a wide selection of Dutch furniture, handmade crafts, and gifts. It’s perfect for browsing or picking up a one-of-a-kind present, whether you’re shopping for yourself or looking for a unique gift. I always end up discovering something unexpected, like a handcrafted basket or a quirky kitchen gadget I didn’t know I needed (seriously, who knew I couldn’t live without a miniature butter churn?).
Timing your visit can make a big difference. The market is open Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Fridays and Saturdays tend to be busier, so I recommend going on a Thursday if you want a more relaxed experience. This way, you can take your time exploring all the vendors and snag the freshest picks before the weekend crowd arrives.
One of my favorite things about The Markets at Shrewsbury is the sense of community. It’s more than just shopping because local farmers, artisans, and families all come together. Even a quick visit leaves you feeling connected. Fresh produce, tasty baked goods, and friendly vendors make the market feel warm and welcoming. It’s basically a small-town hug with shopping bags.
When I visit, I usually make a little game plan (sort of!), but let’s be honest, it’s hard to stick to it with so much to see. I like to start with the fresh produce to grab anything that won’t last long, then check out the baked goods and meats. After that, I take a slow stroll through the crafts and furniture sections, enjoying all the little surprises along the way. By the time I leave, I always feel like I’ve discovered something new and maybe even brought home a few treasures I didn’t plan on.
